Job Evaluation Methods - Formula

Human Resources | Position Management | Job Evaluation Details | Job Evaluation Methods | Formula tab

Summary

The Formula tab page enables you to create a formula for calculating job size according to a Job Evaluation Method. Generally, Job Evaluation formulae are provided by your chosen consultancy.

Example

For example:

  • Price Waterhouse Coopers - ( [Educ] + [Exp] ) * ( ( [Complex] + [Scope] ) / 100 )
  • Hay OT Variation 1 - ( [KNOW] + [PROB] + [ACCT] ) * ( ( 2360 - 2080 ) / 2080 )

Although PayGlobal can cope with complex formulas, it is not a spreadsheet program.

Troubleshooting

A formula can not use Categories that have not been linked to a Job Evaluation Method in the Categories tab page.

Creating a formula

The buttons across the bottom of the Formula page provide the mathematical functions for creating your formula.

To create a formula:

  1. Press the Add Category button.
  2. Select a category from the Select Job Evaluation Categories window.
  3. Click OK. A Confirm message appears:

"Do you want this category to be included in the final sum also?"

    Select Yes or No.

  4. Click the appropriate function buttons along the bottom of the screen to build your formula or use the same functions from the right-click menu. Choose from the following available operators:

Add Category…: Categories can only be added one at a time.

+ Plus: This button inserts a plus sign (+) immediately to the right of the right-most operator (or category) in the formula.

    - Minus: This button inserts a minus sign (-) immediately to the right of the right-most operator (or category) in the formula.

    * Multiply: This button inserts an asterisk (*) immediately to the right of the right-most operator (or category) in the formula. This character represents the multiplication operator.

/ Divide: This button inserts a forward slash (/) immediately to the right of the right-most operator (or category) in the formula. This character represents the division operator.

( Open bracket: This button inserts an open bracket symbol immediately to the right of the right-most operator (or category) in the formula.

) Close bracket: This button inserts a close bracket symbol immediately to the right of the right-most operator (or category) in the formula.

Delete Last Item: This button deletes the right-most operator (or category) in the formula.

Numerical values can be typed and positioned directly into the formula from the keyboard. If you type a number into a formula and press Delete Last Item, the whole number is removed.

Include in final sum

After adding information to a formula, PayGlobal presents the following Confirm message:

"Do you want this category to be included in the final sum also?"

Sometimes a category should not be included in the final sum.

  • Yes

On saving, PayGlobal places a tick in the Category in final sum column in the Categories tab page. When this Job Evaluation Method is used to calculate Job Size, this category is included in the final value.

  • No

This category is ignored in calculation of the final sum when this Job Evaluation Method is used.

The Assessments tab page of a Work Area Position displays the results of a Job Evaluation Method calculation.

Remove a category from final sum

Part of the process of recording a formula is to confirm whether a formula category should be included in the final sum.

It is slightly more difficult to remove a tick from the Category in final sum column in the Categories tab page.

To remove a category from the final sum:

  1. Select the Formula tab page.
  2. Change to Edit mode.
  3. Delete the Category that you want to remove from the final sum.
  4. Click the Add Category button to reach the Select Job Evaluation Categories window.
  5. Double-click the Category to add it back into the formula.
  6. The following Confirm message appears:

"Do you want this category to be included in the final sum also?"

    Select No.

  7. Click Save.
  8. Select the Categories tab page. The Category in final sum column does not have a tick in it.
