Summary

Rate codes are used in:

  • The employee record
  • Transactions
  • Awards
  • Association with an Award

Greater use of Rates may be achieved when Rates are used in conjunction with User- Defined Fields. For example, all employees in an organisation are on a default hourly rate of Grade 1, Grade 2 or Grade 3. Depending on the length of service, some employees are entitled to an additional $2 or $5 on top of the hourly rate which is combined with the Award Rate to form a consolidated hourly rate.

How does PayGlobal know the correct rate to use?

PayGlobal may contain a number of different rates. It uses a transaction hierarchy to determine the correct rate to use when processing.

Categories

There are two types of Rate:

  • Standard
  • Derived Defaults

Standard Rates

A default static rate value is assigned when an employee is paid via Transactions. Standard Rates prevent you needing to remember how much each employee is paid.

Standard Rates do not contain actual values. To assign a value to a Rate, a Rate must be added to an employee's Award or to the Rates Override section of the Employee record.

Derived Defaults

Derived Default Rates are used for:

  • Standard Hourly Rate
  • Standard Daily Rate
  • Standard Weekly Rate
  • Override Rate
  • Average Holiday Rate Last Year
  • Average Holiday Rate This Year

They are commonly used in Payroll and in Time & Attendance and are calculated rates, rather than being static values. Derived Default Rates cannot store a fixed value if you try to attach them to an Award or an employee. Derived Default Rates come from other areas in PayGlobal. For example, if an employee is paid a fixed amount per pay period, then the Default Hourly Rate is this fixed amount divided by the employee’s profiled hours per pay period.

Your PayGlobal Consultant may have set Derived Default Rate Codes to start with the letter “Z”, so they appear in the lower section of the Rate listing.  This coding convention separates the Standard Rates from the Derived Default Rates, creating a logical order.

Rate Rules often used Derived Default Rates.

Examples of Derived Defaults

For example,

  • Default Hourly Rate
  • Default Daily Rate
  • Default Weekly Rate
  • Default Salary Rate
  • Standard Rate Overrides
  • Adjusted Holiday Pay Rate
  • Average Accrued Holiday Rates

Rate Overrides

To override the default rate in an employee’s Payroll transaction, use a Standard Rate Override code. The override gives access to the Rate amount field in a transaction.
